THE DAY THEY RUINED MY LIFE FOREVER
They came into our life, which was full of despair,
And took our little son from our care.
He was only three years old, so small,
We had done nothing wrong at all.
A fight of twelve weeks, so painfully long,
Heartbreak and tears where we still felt strong.
A moment in time that changed everything we knew,
An accident judged as something we’d do.
A fractured tibia, injustice from the court,
A Guardian report of legal sorts.
Their ethos claimed we caused the fracture,
Though truth revealed a different factor.
They said we had sent him away for being naughty,
But our intentions were never haughty.
Classic signs of brittle bone disease, OI,
Small in stature, blue sclera in his eye.
The brittle bone specialist, so very wise,
Saw through what others had failed to recognise.
Sue, from Parents Against Injustice, stood by our side,
With guidance and strength she would not hide.
Support and advice when hope was thin,
Helping us fight what we could not win.
Solicitor John A, from the children’s panel,
Helped us push back against the scandal.
Together we fought and would not fall,
Until the system began to recall.
Our son was returned, the truth broke through,
The powers that be withdrew what they knew.
They said perhaps it could have been an accident’s trace,
No intent, no blame, no case.
Six months later, the truth became clear,
Osteogenesis imperfecta confirmed what we feared.
And now forty years on, the battle remains,
Still standing for others through all of the pain.
Still fighting for parents, still raising a voice,
For truth, for justice, for a fairer choice.
